Baseball produces some of the least concentrated championship forecasts in sport, and the reason is structural. The postseason is a series of short series, and a short series is close to a coin flip even between mismatched teams — a great side wins a seven-game series against a good one well under 70% of the time.

That caps how confident any pre-playoff forecast can be. A team can dominate 162 regular-season games and still enter October as a 30% favourite, because the format deliberately discards most of the evidence it just spent six months accumulating.
