What this question means

Eighty-six percent on no change, 14% on a 25 basis point increase, and roughly nothing on any cut or larger move. The ECB's October decision is priced as close to a formality.

Set that against the Federal Reserve question on this board, where September is near a coin flip between a hold and a quarter-point rise. Two central banks, comparable questions, very different confidence — which is the interesting part.

Central bank predictability is not fixed. It depends on how clearly the institution has signalled its intentions, how much the data has moved since, and whether the committee is at a turning point or in the middle of a settled stance. A market at 86% is saying the ECB's path looks well telegraphed for now.

The 14% still matters. Roughly one time in seven on these numbers, the expected hold does not happen — and rate decisions are among the few events where being on the right side of a small probability moves a great deal else.
